Learn to make vodka

Vodka can be made from anything that contains starch, such as sugar beet, molasses, rye, wheat, potatoes, millet and maize. Generally, vodka is made from molasses, although the finer premium vodkas are made from grain or potato. Another important factor in producing vodka is the quality of the water. During the process, water is used twice; once at the beginning for mashing and then again when diluting the spirit prior to filtration.
The purity of vodka is achieved through the highly controlled distillation process. After fermentation the mash produced contains hundreds of flavouring compounds and different alcohols, these must be eliminated in the vodka distilling process. To achieve this, vodka may be distilled 2, 3, 4 or possibly more times.

For example, vodka passes through a number of columns, each of which removes a certain impurity. The result of this is nearly pure ethanol. Finally the vodka will go through filtration. This takes the rough edge off the vodka and replaces it with a slightly smoother taste.
The most common filtration process is to pass the vodka through activated charcoal, which is made from any tree. Different companies have different methods for filtration, ranging from repeated filtration over silver birch and quartz sand, some are allegedly filtered through diamonds. Smirnoff is said to be filtered through 7 columns packed with charcoal. After this it is possible for the vodka to be flavoured.
